About the Artist

Debra Dunn - Biography

Debra Dunn

I enjoyed art from a very young age. My first memorable drawing was with my mother's lipstick on her wall! Even so, she always encouraged me to persue art.  From coloring books to drawing and calligraphy, I always gravitated toward the visual world. My first painting as a teen gave me a glimpse into the joy of creating with color.  However, without the confidence to persue an art education, I explored my other interests and enjoyed over thirty years as a practicing dentist, now retired.  It wasn't until my children were nearly grown and my career was well established that I found my way back to creating art.  After my Mom passed in 2010, I kept hearing her voice encouraging me to “get back to painting...for yourself”, as she had suggested many times before.  This time I listened and bought some new oils and brushes. Turns out it was great therapy and I was hooked! Since then I have taken local art classes, studied on my own and online and have enjoyed painting workshops in the Provence, France and Scotland and the US.  I also love visiting art museums and galleries and painting en plein air.  I am continually inspired by current and past masters and the beauty that I see all around me. In my art I try to capture a moment of time and place, to preserve a memory, a mood or a thought. My life is full with a great family, a busy work life and my art. Thanks for taking a look. I hope to bring a little beauty and joy to your day!
